He is on the way

IF YOU FEEL like you’re all alone, be assured that God is on His way. He hasn’t forgotten you; He hasn’t abandoned you. In fact, He’s already at work in ways you simply may not realize yet.

Perhaps you feel like the disciples after they got into the boat and headed for Capernaum, following the feeding of the 5,000. They had experienced a terrific high and seen God’s miraculous hand at work, but now they were on their own. John 6:17 says, “It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.”

Maybe that’s how it appears right now. Dark and alone. You can’t see the way ahead, Jesus doesn’t seem to be around, and a storm is rising. It all seems a bit desperate. Take heart, because He is on His way.

John’s account tells how the disciples row a few miles before they see Jesus walking on the water toward them. It must have taken them some time to get that far in a storm. But it likely took Jesus longer to walk the same distance a bunch of men rowed together. In other words, He had already set off. Given He probably walked on water the whole way, He had already initiated a miracle before they knew they needed one.

So just because you don’t see Jesus in your current circumstances doesn’t mean He isn’t already responding. In fact, He probably started out before you even became aware of your need.

Just like with Abraham, when God called him to sacrifice his son, Isaac, on Mount Moriah. When God intervened at the last minute, “Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns” (Genesis 22:13).

All the time Abraham was going up the mountain in obedience, wondering how this seemingly terrible situation was all going to end, God was sending the needed sacrifice up by another route, out of Abraham’s sight.

Wherever you are, He is on His way.
